An Evening with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra & Clara-Jumi Kang

Last month, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s November MainStage concert featuring the extraordinary violinist Clara-Jumi Kang. The performance took place at the beautiful Michigan Theater, which is always such a special venue to work in. Part of the joy of the evening was simply taking in the atmosphere—people watching, noticing little moments, and seeing how everyone interacted with the space.

Being able to photograph up close to the stage was another highlight. It gave me the chance to capture some fun and unique angles that I don’t always get when I’m shooting at Hill Auditorium. And truly, nothing compares to witnessing Clara-Jumi Kang perform. Every time I photograph a classical concert, I learn something new, and each experience leaves me even more in awe of the musicians’ skill and dedication.

I’ve always loved concerts and live music, but seeing a symphony perform in person—watching all the sections come together to bring a piece of music to life—is incredibly inspiring. During this performance, jaws were quite literally dropping. Clara’s artistry, her precision, and the emotion she brought to every note were simply breathtaking.

Thank you to everyone at the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra for inviting me back to document another unforgettable concert! It’s always an honor to walk through the venue doors and document the magic of live music!
